YAML to JSON: Convert Config Files and Fix Common Errors

By Arihant Jain · 6 min read ·

To convert YAML to JSON, parse the YAML structure and serialize the same data as JSON. Indentation represents nesting in YAML, while JSON uses braces and brackets. A converter can do the format change quickly, but understanding what happens to comments, block strings, and unsupported syntax helps prevent surprises.

The UtilityX converter works in your browser and supports common nested mappings, lists, flow collections, and block scalars.

Convert YAML to JSON or JSON to YAML →

Example: YAML converted to JSON

YAML input:

service:
  name: api
  ports:
    - 8080
    - 8081
  enabled: true

Equivalent JSON data:

{
  "service": {
    "name": "api",
    "ports": [8080, 8081],
    "enabled": true
  }
}

The indentation under service becomes a nested object; the dash-prefixed values become an array. Whitespace changes between formats, but the represented values stay the same.

Convert YAML to JSON in a few steps

  1. Choose YAML to JSON mode.
  2. Paste or type the YAML into the input box.
  3. Read the converted JSON and check for any parser error.
  4. Copy or download the output and validate it in the environment where it will be used.

What happens to YAML comments?

JSON has no comment syntax. YAML comments beginning with # are therefore not represented in the JSON output and will be dropped during conversion. If a note must survive, store it as a regular string field in the data rather than relying on a comment.

How block scalars are converted

YAML's | and > markers represent multi-line strings. During conversion, the text becomes a JSON string with newline or folded whitespace according to the YAML block style. If whitespace matters—such as in a script or certificate—inspect the output carefully before using it.

Fix common YAML parsing errors

Check sensitive configuration before sharing it. The UtilityX converter processes the text locally in your browser. Still, do not paste secrets into public screenshots, tickets, or other services.

Convert JSON back to YAML

Switch to JSON-to-YAML mode, paste valid JSON, then review the output indentation and quote behavior. JSON cannot preserve YAML comments or anchors because those features are not part of JSON's data model.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting YAML to JSON change the data?

It should preserve supported data values and structure, but comments have no JSON equivalent and are dropped. Review the output for the configuration you intend to use.

Can JSON contain comments?

Standard JSON has no comment syntax. A YAML comment cannot be carried across as a JSON comment.

Does the converter upload my configuration?

No. The UtilityX converter performs parsing and conversion in your browser; the text you enter is not sent to its server.

Why did the converter show an error?

Check indentation, colons, quoting, and unsupported YAML features such as anchors or custom tags. The error message can help locate invalid input.
