GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax applied on the supply of goods and services in India. Depending on whether you have a pre-tax price or a final, tax-inclusive price, you'll either need to add GST or remove (reverse-calculate) GST.
Add GST: GST Amount = Base Amount × (Rate ÷ 100); Total Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount.
Remove GST: Base Amount = Total Amount ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100); GST Amount = Total Amount − Base Amount.
When a sale happens within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the Central Government) and SGST (collected by the State Government) — each half the total rate. When a sale crosses state lines, the full GST amount is instead collected as IGST (Integrated GST) by the Central Government and later apportioned to the destination state.
Most goods and services in India fall under 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% GST slabs, with some categories taxed at 0% or under special/cess rates. Always confirm the applicable rate for your specific goods or services with the official GST rate schedule, as rates can change.
To add GST to a base amount: GST Amount = Base Amount × (GST Rate / 100), and Total Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive amount: Base Amount = Total Amount / (1 + GST Rate / 100), and GST Amount = Total Amount − Base Amount.
For a supply within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — each is half the total GST rate. For a supply between two different states (inter-state), the full GST amount is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead.
The common GST slabs in India are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, though some goods and services fall outside these (e.g. 0% or special rates). This calculator lets you pick a standard slab or enter any custom rate.
Reverse GST calculation (also called "remove GST" or "GST exclusive" calculation) extracts the original base amount and GST amount from a price that already includes GST — useful when you have a final invoice/MRP and need to know the pre-tax amount.
