Figuring out how much to tip and how to split a bill fairly shouldn't require mental math at the table. This calculator instantly works out the tip amount, the grand total, and exactly how much each person owes.
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount. Amount Per Person = Total Amount ÷ Number of People. Tip Per Person = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People. For example, an $85.00 bill with an 18% tip split 3 ways: Tip = 85 × 0.18 = $15.30, Total = 85 + 15.30 = $100.30, Per Person = 100.30 ÷ 3 = $33.43 (rounded to the nearest cent).
Splitting a bill into whole cents doesn't always divide perfectly. In the example above, three people paying $33.43 each add up to $100.29 — one cent short of the exact $100.30 total. This tiny discrepancy is a normal, expected result of rounding to the nearest cent and isn't something to worry about when splitting a bill among friends.
Tip amount is calculated as Bill Amount multiplied by the Tip Percentage (as a decimal). For example, a $85.00 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip amount of 85 × 0.18 = $15.30.
The total amount (bill plus tip) is divided by the number of people. For example, $85.00 bill + $15.30 tip = $100.30 total; split 3 ways that's $100.30 ÷ 3 = $33.43 per person (rounded to the nearest cent).
This is normal rounding behavior. Splitting $100.30 three ways gives $33.4333..., which rounds to $33.43 per person. Three people paying $33.43 each totals $100.29, one cent less than $100.30 — a standard, expected rounding discrepancy when splitting bills.
